​Abbotsford is growing. Our recreation infrastructure hasn’t kept pace.

With more than 160,000 residents, Abbotsford operates just two major recreation centres. Comparable communities often provide approximately one recreation centre for every 40,000 residents.

​

The shortage extends far beyond recreation centres. Our pools, arenas, fields and courts are under increasing pressure—and residents are already experiencing the consequences.

​

THE IMPACT

Families struggle to secure swim lessons. Teams compete for limited field and court time. Leagues cap registration because they have nowhere to expand. Some Abbotsford teams even play their “home” games in other municipalities.

​

Aging and poorly maintained facilities create accessibility and safety concerns, while residents regularly leave Abbotsford to access the recreation opportunities they cannot find at home.

​

When recreation space is unavailable, people don’t just wait—they miss out.

​

Children lose opportunities to participate. Seniors lose spaces to stay active and connected. Families spend more time and money travelling. Local organizations cannot grow—and spending that could support Abbotsford businesses leaves our community.

​

This is about more than sport. Recreation supports physical health, mental well-being, social connection, inclusion and community pride.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Abbotsford’s recreation infrastructure is not where it should be for a city of our size.

​

Plans, strategies and studies are important—but they do not create capacity on their own.

​

With major projects potentially years or even decades away, Abbotsford also needs meaningful near-term investment in the facilities and spaces residents rely on today.

​

Residents of every age—from children and families to seniors, casual users and competitive athletes—deserve safe, accessible and modern places to move, play and connect.

​

Our population will keep growing. Our recreation deficit will grow with it unless we act.

​

October 17, 2026, is our opportunity to elect a Mayor and Council prepared to make recreation infrastructure a genuine priority.
