Plans don’t always work out.

Grants get denied. Applications get rejected. Locations fall through. Some of that is simply the reality of building major public infrastructure.

But the need doesn’t disappear when the plan does.
We’ve seen what can happen when a major recreation project depends on one path forward.

Years ago, plans were developed for a significant expansion of Matsqui Recreation Centre. The City pursued grant funding to help make it happen, but the grant application was unsuccessful.

The project didn’t move forward — and the additional recreation capacity was never built.

Now, King & McKenzie has hit a different roadblock.

Our concern isn’t that every grant, application or proposal should succeed. That’s unrealistic.

Our concern is what happens next when they don’t.
Because starting over can mean more studies, more consultation, more land searches, more approvals, more budgets — and potentially, more years.

When we’re already talking about major recreation projects stretching into the 2030s and 2040s, we cannot afford to lose another 5, 10 or 15 years every time Plan A doesn’t work.

Council has directed staff to bring back options following the ALC’s decision, and we sincerely hope the time spent waiting for that decision was also spent considering what could come next.

Plan B needs to be part of Plan A.

And with a municipal election approaching, residents have an opportunity to influence what happens next.

Today’s Abbotsford News article highlights the incredible progress our community has made in recruiting family physicians—welcoming 26 new doctors over the past year thanks to strong initiatives from the Abbotsford Division of Family Practice.

But this caught our attention:

Physician recruiter, Dr. Cook, stated that an important way to retain doctors, is to have more local attractions, such as recreation facilities.

“Other communities use these amazing recreation facilities as part of their recruitment.”

Another physician recruiter shared that Abbotsford came close to recruiting a doctor—but ultimately lost them to another community with better skating facilities.

That’s a powerful reminder that recreation isn’t just about sports — it’s about creating a community where young professionals want to set down roots, where families want their children to grow up, where businesses want to invest, and where people want to retire.

We’ve said for a long time that investing in recreation is an investment in Abbotsford’s future. It’s encouraging to see healthcare leaders making that same connection.

Why?

Because the City reportedly did not apply.

While communities across BC are preparing celebrations, public viewing events, and community opportunities connected to one of the world’s biggest sporting events, Abbotsford has been left out entirely.

The City’s response indicated that volunteer-run sport organizations were not in a position to independently lead an event of this scale.

But many residents are now asking:
Why wouldn’t our City want to work alongside Tourism Abbotsford and community organizations to help put on a once-in-a-lifetime event for residents, rather than placing the responsibility on already overextended unpaid volunteers?

This is about more than soccer.

It’s about leadership, initiative, community pride, and whether Abbotsford is actively pursuing opportunities that benefit residents.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW? 🚨
Youth athletes in Abbotsford are currently playing on fields that are not being maintained to basic safety standards.
We recently heard from a local softball coach whose U15 player was seriously injured during practice at Mill Lake field due to unsafe conditions.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a new concern. Local associations have been asking the City for years to level and maintain this field to a minimum standard. Despite repeated requests — and now multiple follow-ups after this injury — the City has still not appropriately addressed this concern.

Softball associations from other Municipalities have even refused to play games against Abbotsford at this field due to its poor condition.

Youth athletes in Abbotsford are currently playing on fields that are not being maintained to basic safety standards.
We recently heard from a local softball coach whose U15 player was seriously injured during practice at Mill Lake field due to unsafe conditions.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a new concern. Local associations have been asking the City for years to level and maintain this field to a minimum standard. Despite repeated requests — and now multiple follow-ups after this injury — the City has still not appropriately addressed this concern.

Softball associations from other Municipalities have even refused to play games against Abbotsford at this field due to its poor condition.

The City of Abbotsford is working on a Strategic Plan for investing in Sport Court and Field infrastructure. This is a step in the right direction, but our concerns, alongside many others in the recreation and sporting community, are that the timelines are too far out.

We believe there are many small scale projects that can take place today, to bring our facilities up to comparable standards while simultaneously planning for future large-scale projects.

Last year, we comprised a list of the Top 3 Requests from many of the Local Sports Organizations in Abbotsford and presented it to the Mayor, City Manager and Councillors. The asks? Many simple: Small investments to improve the safety, accessibility, and pride of our sporting community.

Our fields deserve proper irrigation, fencing, and lighting. Our athletes deserve covered practice areas. Our Pickleballers deserve a dedicated facility. Our Lacrosse and Ball Hockey teams deserve a covered, lit Box that allows for use year-round. Cricket athletes deserve dedicated fields. Our Footballers deserve access to an entire field so they can properly run drills. Our Fastpitch athletes deserve a field that is safe to play on - where out of town teams no longer refuse to compete here. Our soccer athletes deserve a proper bathroom facility. The list is long, but we believe it is truly achievable and will have a major impact on the success of our athletes, the health of the community, and the overall pride of our City.

There’s no prioritization. No real timelines. No cost or impact context. No way to express urgency.

And most importantly - no reflection of the reality families are facing right now which is the most pressing concern:

Waitlists.

The pathway has finally been widened and leveled, making it safer and more accessible for everyone who uses this busy loop - walkers, runners, families with strollers, mobility devices, and cyclists.

Lighting is also currently being installed, which will make the space even safer year-round.

Mill Lake is one of the most widely used recreation areas in Abbotsford, and this was a simple fix that improves the experience for thousands of residents every week.

Thank you to the City of Abbotsford for acknowledging this as a priority and moving quickly to get it done ✅

This is also a great reminder that when we identify practical improvements and work together to move them forward, meaningful progress can happen quickly. This morning, an Abbotsford Minor Hockey coach set an alarm for 8:15am to sign his kids up for a simple stick & puck session.
By 8:17am, all 31 spots were gone.
That’s not a tournament.
That’s not a league.
That’s not even organized practice.
That’s kids just trying to get on the ice.
This is what families are dealing with every single week — alarms set, fingers ready, hoping to beat the clock just to access basic recreation. When drop-in hockey fills in under two minutes, it’s not a demand issue — it’s a capacity failure.
And this matters — because 2026 is a municipal election year.
Decisions about recreation, arenas, and long-term infrastructure are being made right now. What gets prioritized in the next term will shape access to sport and recreation in Abbotsford for decades.
We don’t need one more rink.
We need multiple new rinks.
And we need them planned now, not pushed decades down the road.

Let’s Talk Abbotsford! A new survey released by the City asks for public input to help shape the future of Aquatic infrastructure in Abbotsford.

The survey asks if residents agree with the proposal to build a 50m pool at MSA to serve primarily competitive and lap swimmers. A 50m pool is a much needed addition to Abbotsford, allowing for competitive swimmers to stay locally, attract other competitive swimmers, and host competitions (a boon for the local economy).

Do you agree with the location and the proposed scale and timeline? Perhaps MSA should be used to twin much needed ice rinks and a 50m pool should be part of a more comprehensive aquatic centre? Or perhaps we are in dire need that starting on this project immediately is what is best for the City?

MRC is currently listed as in “poor to critical” condition, yet this plan only sees real improvement by the year 2037. That’s 12 years from now.

ARC is under-utilized by families (and still extremely busy!) due to the cool temperature of the water, and limited ‘family-fun’ features. In our opinion, ARC needs a major overhaul to bring it to a standard that families and residents enjoy - but is building on the existing site the answer? We all know the timeline is too far out.

We don’t want to see people continuously leaving Abbotsford to enjoy the fun (and warm!) pools at Mission Leisure Centre, driving to other cities to train their athletes, or flocking to Aldergrove for their Outdoor Water Experience. Abbotsford, and our residents, deserve amenities that draw people to our City, that keep people in our City, and that provide local gathering places to play and compete.

We believe this survey and strategy are steps in the right direction, we just want to make sure there is a sense of urgency and the projects are built on a realistic timeline to serve our population now and in the future.

A parent wrote to tell us how their daughter, a competitive swimmer who dreams of competing provincially and swimming in university, had every opportunity to thrive before moving here. In Prince George, she trained six days a week and had access to nearby dryland training. Since coming to Abbotsford in 2021, she now gets less than four hours a week in the pool due to lack of available competition-grade facilities.

Her family simply can’t drive to other cities to make up for what’s missing here.

This is the reality for too many families in Abbotsford.

No family should feel forced to leave a community of this size to access recreation opportunities.

Today, we met with the Mayor and City Manager to formally present your feedback — every comment, message, and suggestion shared through Instagram, Facebook, and our petition. Alongside that, we submitted additional letters of support and action items from the many clubs and associations we’ve connected with over the past several months.

Our goal remains clear: a unified push for meaningful investment in Abbotsford’s recreation infrastructure.
One key step forward we’re advocating for is the creation of a Sports & Recreation Advisory Committee — a formal body that can represent the public, support grant funding, and help oversee long-term progress.

The meeting was respectful, and we made our concerns known. We believe we were heard — and they now understand that this movement isn’t going away.

We’ll keep pushing forward, together. 💪 Stay tuned for what’s next.
